Sweet like chocolate

SWEET LIKE CHOCOLATE There is nothing wrong with honey! I mean bees make the stuff for goodness sake. From the flowers to your table and nothing much in between. Chocolate, well there is quite a bit wrong with that, but not if you make it like this; 1/2 cup coconut oil 2 tbsp organic honey 1/4 cup cacao powder Melt everything gently in a saucepan whisking ingredients together.  Add a couple of tbsp of finely chopped nuts and/or dried fruit

Sunday Mornings

EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNINGS There is something special about Sundays. That lazy, slow day that never makes you feel guilty about being just that. I am amazed how many people still make their way out on Sundays, why not just stay home? This simple Coffee Guide from Sealoe and my Nespresso machine gives you a glimpse into Sundays at My Little House. Photography and Styling by My Little House

Music to my ears

MUSIC TO MY EARS Tivoli. I’ve admired these for such a long time; something practical that is also aesthetically pleasing is a rare find.  I’ve not had reason to take the plunge and purchase one, that is until, the day of the rain. I like open windows and unfortunately sometimes I forget to close them so when we had a day of heavy rain, the open window, above the stereo kind of necessitated my purchase.  I wasn’t too

Hygge (Hoo-ga)

HYGGE (HOO-GA) Denmark.  The happiest country in the world. I am sure there are a variety of contributing factors but at this time of year in New Zealand when it gets cold and wet I envy their tradition of Hygge.  Rather than fight their winter they make every effort to enjoy it, hence Hygge, which roughly translated means “cozy”.  While us New Zealanders are busy fleeing our beautiful country between June and August to somewhere tropical the Danes hunker

Organic Interiors

ORGANIC INTERIORS Organic interiors are becoming ever more popular.  The ability to repurpose, reuse, or adapt items to fit into your home is at the heart of this design aesthetic.  Items claimed from the land such as crafted wooden furniture, clay pottery, plants and foliage, skins, furs, baskets, linen and weaving feature heavily and an emphasis on living simply is key.  Colour doesn’t feature in these homes, though even without the warmth is evident through the timbers and layers

The Perfect Day

THE PERFECT DAY Every now and then you have the perfect day, right? Today was one for me. It started with a daily walk… and a little forage for my new vase… Then, a little work… styling up a bedroom space… Then, a little company for afternoon tea.  The problem these days is what to serve?  Almost everyone is sugar free.  But you have to love the internet because a quick search gave me this little gem… Chocolate

Farewell Summer

FAREWELL SUMMER At the close of every summer, someone in our community has a little party. It’s a tradition and this year I’ve taken on the challenge with an afternoon tea. I’ve cut the last of the roses and stuffed them in glass vessels with whatever else I can find in the garden. The season is changing and there is little colour left. I finally resort to the herb garden, and beyond – the roadside gives me classic daisies

Its that time; feijoa time!

ITS THAT TIME; FEIJOA TIME Feijoas!  Those little oval green gems are usually in abundance about now.  We don’t have any trees at my little house but the area I live in believes in sharing their excess fare so I’ve picked up a bag which I am happy to enjoy with just a spoon as nature intended. They are not as big and perfect as those supermarket ones but they are organic!  I think I will be freezing some to use

Challenging the useful and beautiful

So, I am not the most gadget orientated person, in fact I’m usually the last person to get such things, but lately Ive been pushing the boat out; I finally upgraded my IPhone 4 (this was partly due to my failing eyesight); I bought a UE wireless speaker and signed up for Spotify; I am happy to say that an Apple TV has been purchased and I now have the ability to watch SUITS on Netflix (Harvey Spector I

Colours of Autumn

You can tell Autumn is here when long sleeves in shades of russets are leaving the confines of your wardrobe. It means very shortly the scarves will be making an appearance and what better way to hang them but on a design original by Laura Carwardine .  She had me in mind when she conceived this I’m sure; when nothing is on it its still makes a statement with its geometric patterns in brass plate finish. Thanks Umbra for supporting these designers to make just what we all
