My Little House

Layer me up

LAYER UP I know its getting cold when I leave the house in three or more layers and the same goes for my home.  Not being a lover of colourful rooms in my own home I turn to texture to create depth and warmth.  Texture gets your senses going! From cow hides, to sheepskins, to wool, to cotton, to rabbit skins to deer hides, to hemp to leather, from wood to concrete to marble and even paper, my little house has it all… layered

Sunday Style

I love it when a package arrives… even if its not for me, I get to have a little play before it heads to its rightful home.  This cushion cover from Resident GP by the talented Ylva Skarp looks right at home on my sofa; aptly named ‘FREE”; (I guess it is… for today anyway); its all the way from Sweden, now take a look at it in my little old NZ living room…   Gorgeous huh… Pattern sometimes

Sunday Style

The design aesthetic in my own home is a little Nordic, a little Vintage and a little Industrial, hence these metal office trays have found their way into my living room and given me an excuse for a little Sunday Styling. The best thing about re-purposing items is that it will be unique to your home, and of course things don’t have to stay static; mix it up a little by changing around the items in the tray…

Sunday Style

Its a little dull weather-wise here for Easter Sunday so some styling might be in order to brighten up my day; and a corner of my little house! This Mocka Jimmy Stand is a cheap and versatile little piece; use in an entrance, bedroom, or living space to create a simple but gorgeous vignette. No need to purchase anything special; your little house is bound to have all the items you need to transform the stand into something that is

My Obsession with Chairs

I am slightly obsessed with chairs, in my time Ive had a few different styles gracing my dining table from Bentwood to Rattan to Ghost to Tolix to Eames… and I think Ive just found another love… these gorgeous chairs are designed by French engineer Jean Prouve.  Designed in 1934 and yes a little bit Schoolish but something about these appeals… Another style I could definaltey find a home for would be Hans Wegners Wishbone Chair, it made its debut a

Le Sac en Papier

Aptly called the paper bag these wee beauties are a styling essential.  Made from recycled paper in Paris no less they have made their mark all over the world and NZ is not exempt.  They are the perfect piece of typography, simple and functional and just a wee bit different. Scrunched up or straight, empty or full, white or brown they are something that simply fills an empty space while creating a little visual intérêt.  Here they are in my little

The Other Floor

My little house has a mixture of flat and pitched ceilings; all the flat ceilings are gibbed, plastered and painted and all the pitch are wood tongue and groove.  Over the years I have had a love – hate relationship with these ceilings and finally the day arrived when I cried PAINT THEM WHITE!  So the painter is booked and suddenly what do I see?  A flood of exposed wooden beams and tongue and groove ceiling gracing the internet.  Oh

Feelin’ hot hot hot

FEELIN’ HOT HOT HOT We are having an unbelievable summer here in NZ; temperatures are souring and while loving the continuous clear days I am beginning to wish it would cool down a little – NO!  I hear you say?  Well I suppose you are right we need to take it while we can; our weather is so unpredictable we could be wishing our way to an early winter! So how to cool down?  Keep hydrated, drink WATER, H20, AQUA!  Whatever you call

Summer Lovin’

We all have a favourite thing that happens seasonally in our gardens and the best thing about Summer at My Little House is the plum tree!  Seriously the best plums EVER!  Trouble is there is way too many all at once, so what to do… SO, I’ve made Plum Cake, Stewed Plums, Preserved Plums, Plum Jam, (do you know how much sugar goes into jam?!), and of course delivered a few bags around the neighbourhood! Still, nothing beats that

The Christmas Table

Every year Christmas at My Little House involves a new table setting.  The family arrive and the first thing they do is check out the theme, this involves a name place that they may take home as a memento of the evening.  This year I didn’t host the event, but my sister did a wonderful job keeping up the tradition.  Of course I couldn’t let a year go by without decorating my own Christmas table so on boxing
