Styling 101 | Christmas

MY LITTLE MONOCHROME CHRISTMAS Despite the fact I have no littlies in the house I still feel the need to count down the sleeps to Christmas.  I’m not sure why that is, perhaps habit.  Advent calenders with a daily chocolate were such a treat as a child, but with two sisters it always seem an age to get to my turn! When my son was little we had all sorts of different ways of counting down, from the

Sweet Nothings

SWEET NOTHINGS I really wanted to try this Bounty Bar Recipe. I really, really wish I hadn’t! The are so simple to make and totally delicious, and what better way to present them than on a marble tray with some summer roses that are in abundance in My Little House garden just at the moment Tempted? 2/3 Cup Sweetened Condensed Milk 3 Cups Coconut 1/2 Cup Icing Sugar 250g Bar Chocolate  Mix together until sticky enough to form

Dark Feature Walls

DARK FEATURE WALLS At my little house I have two dark feature walls, one in the master bedroom, that divides the bed and dressing room, and one dividing the kitchen and dining (its actually hiding very important pipes from upstairs and a just as important wine rack inside it). They are the same colour, was that because we had left-over paint?  Um, yes.  At first the kitchen wall was in blackboard paint but I decided pretty quickly that

Styling 101 | Hallways and Entry

STYLING 101 | HALLWAYS AND ENTRY Having an open plan layout means that hallways are not in abundance in my little house.  In fact, during renovations I actually created them (losing precious space in the process) just so I could have them! Many Mid Century homes find themselves in this prediciment; the craving for light and open airy spaces not seen prior to this stage of architecture necessitated spaces that lacked doors and hallways. I wouldn’t trade my

Styling 101 | The Bedroom

STYLING 101 | THE BEDROOM When my little house was photographed for Homestyle Mag the photo that seemed to dominate Social Media was our Guest Bedroom, formally our master bedroom.  It surprised me somewhat as the room had been styled by me, expecting that cropped shots would be taken, not for the doorway shot that ended up being in print.  You see to me the room is too busy; there are wall lights – that I would prefer

My New Love

MY NEW LOVE | STRING SYSTEM Hello my new love. You are perfect for my little house. The String System is Swedish in origin; it was designed for the smaller spaces of their apartments and works a treat with its unobtrusive design.  Launched in 1949 it was a minimalistic, simple and adaptable option for shelving in commercial and domestic spaces and it has gone on to become an icon, achieving awards and its rightful place in the history

Natural Cleaning Products

JANOLA AND JIFF We live in a semi-rural spot which means we are the proud owners of a Septic Tank.  Well sometimes not so proud! Ours is an older system and it requires a bit of maintenance to keep it all working well and part of its ongoing maintenance is to make sure I use all natural cleaning products.  Since I was brought up on Janola and Jiff it did take a little persuading! There are many on

Styling 101 | Kitchens

STYLING 101 | KITCHENS I would love to be the owner of a home with 3.6m high ceilings, great feature windows with even greater architraves and original wooden flooring, but I’m not. We bought a tiny cottage and added (on a budget), added again (thankfully on a higher budget), but it’s still a fairly standard home, there are times when armed with my camera I wish it was bigger (or I was smaller) or that those windows weren’t

Empty Nest

EMPTY NEST The day has come… 20 years in the making… my son is leaving home!  They say a mother cat is ready when her kittens leave her care and within a day resume her life as it was before her off-spring arrived.  While I believe there is a difference between the human and feline parenting process I can honestly say I’m ready.  This is not to say I am likely to worry less but there just comes that

Display Ladder

DISPLAY LADDER Living in a styled interior isn’t difficult and that’s because everything I have I love and everything has its place (even if it moves around a little). I love this lightweight metal display ladder I found in Freedom Furniture.  I was shopping for a client, needless to say I left the shop with two.  Its simplistic lines make it ideal for filling a space where you need height but don’t want heavy furniture, making it an invaluable
