TWENTY TWENTY TWO
We had high hopes for 2022! The last few months of 2021 left us all exhausted, perhaps a little bit fearful and most definitely tired of counting down the days of isolation on our calendars.
We welcomed 2022 with vigour; opening our doors in January to our family and friends, to the sunshine and to possibility but sadly the new Omicron variant of Corovirus crept in.
We haven’t quite shut them, they remain a little ajar, but with every day we have come to accept that the virus is here and is creeping its way around the country leaving us, once again counting down the days until the end.
Imagine though, how much of a statement 2022 might be able to make if we celebrate its presence in a bold and fearless manner. Counting down the days in the simple style that is the Stendig doesn’t seem quite so bad after all!
Welcome to my little house, Stendig Calendar.
There is no denying I love a good design item. This one described as “arguably the greatest calendar of all time” has Italian origins. Modernest Massimo Vignelli combined modernism of the 1960’s with Swiss typeface Helvetica in a black and white grid. This calendar not only adorns walls of businesses and homes it also has a place in the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York. It is interesting to note that Vignelli also designed the signage for the New York Subway System as well as some other prominent logos. The calendar was commissioned by the Stendig Furniture Company, most famously known for its chair collection. I love how this calendar has design origins, it really is a work of art that has stood the test of time.
Each month is either a white background with black typeface or my favourite, a black background with a white typeface. The week, you’ll notice, starts on a Monday which I find preferable to starting on a Sunday; it makes more sense since we associate the beginning of the week with the first day back at work after the weekend.
Hanging the Stendig is traditionally done with nails; there are three holes at the top of the calendar so starting at one end hammer a nail/hook in 3/4 of the way, then use a level to make sure its straight, continue with the second and third holes, when you are sure you’ve got it straight finish hammering in the nails. Alternatively to save your walls you can use Command adhesive strips, you’ll need about six of these; make sure you use a level to get it straight. I used these handy Visbäck poster hangers from Ikea for my Stendig.
When ‘done’ each month simply tears away to reveal the next but the used months are way to cool to simply discard. I recommend repurposing these beautiful sheets of typography into what ever takes your fancy; wrapping paper, laminated number games for the children, framed snippets of numbers, placemats, an advent calendar for next Christmas and even decoupage.
