Brass to Black

BRASS TO BLACK

The door to my little house is paneled wood; quite unloved it’s surface was largely weathered and looked fairly out of place in my monochrome interior, though I did love the dignity of it; a little bit of contrast to my mostly flat surfaces.

It got a coat of Black Semi-Gloss paint soon after I moved in though I hadn’t gotten around to changing the hardware; brass and also fairly weathered they needed an upgrade. A side effect of being in Lockdown for five weeks is noticing every single defect of our homes and it started to bother me more and more… when Alert Level 3 allowed I looked towards replacement. I realised that my skill level didn’t really run to ‘locksmith’ (I couldn’t even figure out how to get them off) so I decided to give them a bit of a DIY upgrade instead.

Mitre 10 Click and Collect allowed me to get what I needed so I pretty much got onto that day, sadly I forgot masking tape but improvising with one of my many online brown paper supermarket shopping bags and a roll of sellotape I managed.

I gave them a very light sand just to removed any grease and grime and away I went. The Rust-oleum product I used has a primer built in so simply open the lid and push spray… it is very quick and actually very satisfying. There were a couple of run-away dribbles but I caught them in time with a damp cloth so no damage done!

A 15 minute job well done… I wish losing the couple of Lockdown kilos I have gained was as simple!

If your home doesn’t have a defined entrance consider installing a nib wall. A nib wall is a wall that juts out at 90 degrees. Mine doesn’t allow the floor area for furniture but it gives you the feeling of entering into a ‘space’ rather than a large room. It also gives you an opposing wall that can be used for art or furniture.

The key to defining a small entrance way is to make a statement with your door, a rug, wall art and even plants.
The Muuto Dots provide a 3-D art effect and by adding one to the door the area has a common link. The Philodendron is located on the String Shelving on the opposite side and happily trails over.
