Comfort Food

COMFORT FOOD There is always a recipe you relate to that feeling of comfort, of contentment and warmth.  A Hygge recipe. This is mine.  I was given it by my Aunt so I don’t know its exact origin, but it quickly became the recipe I pull out when someone is coming for lunch at short notice, or a casual dinner, I’ve handed it out to many friends and family, so I thought it was time I get it in

Summer Entertaining

SUMMER ENTERTAINING There is something about summer that we New Zealanders embrace, not the muggy heat, not the mozzies and certainly not the unpredictable weather, but we throw off those BBQ covers and get inviting.  Subtle and simple, we don’t possess any airs and graces its merely a casual “pop over and we will throw something on the barbie”. Well, I do have a little problem with that, not the simplicity, not the food itself and not the spontaneity,

The Christmas Table

THE CHRISTMAS TABLE Thats it, 2016 Christmas Dinner done and dusted.  The weather was less than perfect but in the end does it matter?  A time for togetherness and belonging, family, food and fun. My son is off to Norway to study in a few days time and so my theme this year? Norwegian Peaks and Mountain Flowers (okay, I picked them on the roadside in my community but still…) The little mountain peaks are wooden Christmas Tree Decorations

Styling 101 | Kitchens

STYLING 101 | KITCHENS I would love to be the owner of a home with 3.6m high ceilings, great feature windows with even greater architraves and original wooden flooring, but I’m not. We bought a tiny cottage and added (on a budget), added again (thankfully on a higher budget), but it’s still a fairly standard home, there are times when armed with my camera I wish it was bigger (or I was smaller) or that those windows weren’t

A Quiet Night in

A QUIET NIGHT IN For me, there is nothing better than returning home after a busy day and not having to go out again.  Yes I am a homebody; a quiet night in with some wine, some cheese and family in my little house, is as appealing as champagne on a yacht! And so this gorgeous concrete platter from Fume, with a little halloumi, a pile of homemade Paleo crackers and of course a little coffee table styling makes for

Sweet like chocolate

SWEET LIKE CHOCOLATE There is nothing wrong with honey! I mean bees make the stuff for goodness sake. From the flowers to your table and nothing much in between. Chocolate, well there is quite a bit wrong with that, but not if you make it like this; 1/2 cup coconut oil 2 tbsp organic honey 1/4 cup cacao powder Melt everything gently in a saucepan whisking ingredients together.  Add a couple of tbsp of finely chopped nuts and/or dried fruit

The Perfect Day

THE PERFECT DAY Every now and then you have the perfect day, right? Today was one for me. It started with a daily walk… and a little forage for my new vase… Then, a little work… styling up a bedroom space… Then, a little company for afternoon tea.  The problem these days is what to serve?  Almost everyone is sugar free.  But you have to love the internet because a quick search gave me this little gem… Chocolate

Farewell Summer

FAREWELL SUMMER At the close of every summer, someone in our community has a little party. It’s a tradition and this year I’ve taken on the challenge with an afternoon tea. I’ve cut the last of the roses and stuffed them in glass vessels with whatever else I can find in the garden. The season is changing and there is little colour left. I finally resort to the herb garden, and beyond – the roadside gives me classic daisies
